following an international competition, OMA has been chosen to complete a new exhibition center for the chinese city of shanghai. located in the region’s rapidly developing pudong neighborhood, the project occupies the site of a former shipyard and provides a concentrated event space that shares a close connection with the surrounding financial district.

titled the ‘lujiazui exhibition center’, the scheme is suspended above a public plaza, and is connected to further galleries positioned below grade. the building organizes the open space, adding programmatic opportunities for film screenings, fashion shows, and concerts. below ground, the covered plaza can be utilized for more intimate events.

in order to establish a strong dialogue with the site, the design’s materiality references the industrial nature of the plot, with the elongated volume wrapped in a metallic mesh that exposes its steel structure. it is forecast that the complex will be open to the public within the next 12 months.
