currently standing as new york’s tallest residential building, the completed ‘one57‘ tower soars above midtown new york with a distinctive patterned façade. working alongside developers extell, architect christian de portzamparc‘s design is generated from manhattan’s specific set of planning regulations, maximizing the constraints of the irregular L-shaped plot.

the 306 meter edifice is a composition of contrasting, yet unified geometric shapes, housing a range of living accommodation, including the new park hyatt hotel. the façade’s cascading glazed strips become curved forms as they peel away from the structure; sheltering external terraces, and animating the building’s elevations.

the 75-storey project utilizes two different types of glass, offering a distinct visual contrast. the pinnacle of the tower tapers to form an identifiable silhouette on the new york skyline, fully embodying the scheme’s strong sense of vertical movement. the volume and the façades of the tower were designed by pritzker laureate christian de portzamparc, while the interiors were completed by new york-based designer thomas juul-hansen. see designboom’s coverage of the project in its concept and construction phase, here.
