OPEN architecture has revealed its proposed design for the pudong art museum in shanghai, china. the competition to complete the new institution is still ongoing, with OPEN joined on the shortlist by established names SANAA, ateliers jean nouvel, and david chipperfield architects. the extremely prominent site is located at the tip of pudong’s lujiazui central business district, directly below the oriental pearl tower.

OPEN architecture began with an urban concept that proposed the use of natural landscape to connect the currently fragmented cultural facilities and riverbanks to create a large looped park system. within this connected landscape, new cultural, leisure, and entertainment programs are inserted to complement the existing nodes, consolidating the site’s role as a cultural destination.

positioned at an important junction within the site, the pudong art museum connects the parklands with the riverside. the existing landscape is transformed into a sculpture garden and music park, conceived as an extension of the institution. the museum’s intermediate level becomes an ‘urban stage’, with the iconic oriental pearl tower as its backdrop.

the museum’s form is partly derived from constraints such as height limits, while its future relationship with existing buildings has also been considered. a completely open plaza sits within a void at the heart of the building, while the upper and lower storeys create a frame through which to survey the bund and the city itself.

the upper part of the building contains an orthogonal gallery, surrounded by more open exhibition spaces. the arrangement has been designed to be as flexible as possible, capable of accommodating a wide range of curatorial requirements. meanwhile, the base of the building seeks to combine urban life and education, with a series of auditoriums, libraries and workshops.
