‘orbital house’ designed by young london-based practice foster lomas has been giving planning permission to be built on the grounds of medlars in east grinstead, england. the single-storey structure will be located in the same area as michael twigg’s mid-century modernist house, surrounded by garden and english landscape. lightweight in structure and contemporary in design, the interior is arranged for easy mobility with disabled access throughout. the curvilinear form of the building is influenced by the evidence found that there were once circular groundworks there, previously the walled gardens of oasted house. the space internally is illuminated through the center conical skylight and the room arrangement is open plan where the two double bedrooms lead to the living area. the house itself is wrapped in perforated corten with the private spaces cladded in timber branches and over time, will enable the flora to merge with the building and furthering its growth to subtly blend with the natural environment.
