papabubble in yokohama by jo nagasaka / schemata architects

papabubble candy shop specializes in delicately crafted handmade sweets, made on-site as visitors peruse the store. the location in yokohama, japan has been reconceived by jo nagasaka of schemata architects from its original design by yusuke seki (see designboom’s coverage here) the new plan integrates the characteristic charm of the on-the-spot custom creations into the aesthetic and overall design of the space.

nagasaka’s layout highlights the movements of the candy makers, spotlighting their technique during the making process. the introduction of glass paneling both separates the kitchen and the commercial area and allows the visitor to peer into the cookery. gray concrete floors, walls, and tabletops dominate the interior aesthetic, creating a striking contrast between the vibrantly colored candy pieces and the surfaces they sit on. a strong significance is placed on the relationship between the concrete and its formwork; various configurations — with the integration of glass and tiles — creates a multi-layered sensibility that both welcomes and receives visitors, staff and products.

along the facade of the main wall — opposite from the kitchen — are small, square black tiles. the expanse of the material serves as the backdrop for the main display of candy, packaged in clear plastic bags and arranged in a grid-like formation against the surface. the clear effort to feature the product is evident in the contrast of the colored treats in the interior that they occupy.
