plans have been unveiled for a modular demountable stadium, which will be built in time for the 2022 football world cup in qatar. the project was revealed by the supreme committee for delivery & legacy (SC), the organization responsible for the event’s infrastructure, and is the tournament’s seventh stadium to be presented. the arena will be built using modular building blocks (including shipping containers), each comprising removable seats, concession stands, lavatories, and other fundamental stadium elements. the design also means that it can be reassembled on another site or even turned into multiple smaller venues.

conceived by fenwick iribarren architects, the 40,000-seat venue will be located on a waterfront site in doha, the capital of the middle eastern country. ‘innovation has always been central to our plans for delivering a historic FIFA world cup that leaves a legacy for qatar and the world, and there is no better example of this than the design of ras abu aboud stadium,’ says SC secretary general H.E. hassan al thawadi. ‘this venue offers the perfect legacy, capable of being reassembled in a new location in its entirety or built into numerous small sports and cultural venues.’

currently named the ‘ras abu aboud stadium’, the arena’s modular design also means that construction will require fewer materials, create less waste, and reduce the carbon footprint of the building process. meanwhile, the stadium precinct will offer views over doha’s landmark corniche, (a seven-kilometer long waterfront promenade), and into the downtown west bay area. construction has already started, with a completion date slated for 2020 — two years before the tournament gets underway.
