rafael de la-hoz has designed ‘a cut between heaven and earth’, a 60m landmark monument that is dedicated to TEDA (tianjin economic-technological development area) in china. the sculpture is located in the core of tianjin binhai, at the gateway to the bohai economic rim where it is intended to represent the importance of its 30 years of existence. known as one of the nation’s first sites for advanced industrial and financial reform and innovation, the piece also celebrates it as being a prosperous platform for china’s economy. five world-renowned teams were invited to produce a design under the theme ‘beautiful teda’, in promotion of the surrounding natural ecology and comfortable living environment.

this proposal is driven by a process of abstraction and reinterpretation of the site. instead of locating the object on the road junction, the new placement enables a more balanced dialogue with existing buildings to provide a connected space in-between. a mirror appears at the top and reflects off it a ray of light that is visible on december 6th to commemorate the birth of TEDA.
