renzo piano to design one sydney harbour for barangaroo south masterplan

renzo piano is the latest to join the elite architectural team involved in the barangaroo masterplan in sydney, australia, led by developers lend lease. piano has been chosen to design ‘one sydney harbour’, the second residential release at barangaroo south and final stage of luxury apartments, along the waterfront. the first 159 units distributed over two waterfront buildings ‘anadara’ and ‘alexander’ were conceived by local firms FJMT and PTW respectively, and sold out within 3.5 hours of their announcement in august 2013. they are projected welcome their first residents in the later part of 2015.

renzo piano’s scheme was announced as part of a revised concept plan for barangaroo south known as modification (mod 8), submitted to the new south wales (NSW) department of planning and environment. the proposed future of the precinct would see the italian architect’s towers becoming landmarks along the skyline, offering panoramic views of the sydney opera house and harbour bridge, rivaling some of the world’s most elite residences.

on being appointed to realize the luxury residences, renzo piano stated:a city development of three luxury residential high-rise towers in such a location is, in this climate, a rare opportunity. our vision is to design three buildings with a gentle presence in the cityscape and in dialogue with the harbour waters and barangaroo waterfront.’

lend lease’s barangaroo south managing director andrew wilson said of piano’s plan:with exceptional craftsmanship, first-class interiors and panoramic views, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create the most desirable high rise apartments ever built in australia. one sydney harbour will be an iconic australian address and we are delighted to work with renzo piano to build architecture that will complement sydney’s skyline and stand the test of time.’ continuing, wilson stated, ‘the revised concept plan represents an exciting vision for one of the most significant harbour projects in sydney’s history. in the updated design, lend lease maintains its original ambition to dedicate more than half of the 7.68 hectare site to public space. proposed features for the community include a waterfront promenade, neighbourhood park, urban square and harbour cove with direct access to the water. we have ensured that all of the public benefits that we originally proposed in our 2010 plan remain in mod 8, such as complete harbour-front access and vibrant community spaces.’
