richard meier & partners has broken ground in taiwan at the site of their first project in the country. developed by fubon land, the ‘taichung condominium tower’ will form a luxury residential complex at the center of the city, in close proximity to the region’s primary civic buildings: the new city hall, the opera house and the convention center. the 47-storey structure will stand at a total height of 163 meters, and is slated for completion by march 2018.

the design comprises two distinct towers of different heights, connected through a central core. the formal, ordered and geometric northern tower is oriented towards the larger city scale, while the more expressive and sculptural form of its neighbor defines the main entrance to the building, relating to the residential urban fabric south of the site. in addition to the lobby, the scheme’s three lower floors will contain various amenity spaces for residents, including a swimming pool, fitness center, lounge, massage rooms, and western and chinese banquet suites.

the main façade of the south edifice is articulated with a gently curved white translucent glass screen, which provides privacy and filters daylight into the building. a communal sky garden on the sixteenth floor of the north tower provides a viewing platform for residents, creating an open and direct connection between the interior, and the vibrant urban setting of the site.

‘we are delighted to unveil the design of our first project in taiwan and we are honored to be part of the dynamic architectural vibrancy of taichung. the new tower responds to the scale of city’s existing fabric while sustaining the modern architectural dialogue which we continue to refine and explore throughout our work. we truly believe that the building will become a prominent new addition in taichung’s city center and will embody our commitment to quality and timeless architecture’, explained richard meier.
