melbourne-based studio rob kennon architects restored and renovated a traditional weatherboard scheme to accommodate the day-to-day lives of the young family residing. the project involved refurbishing existing elements, with the primary objective to differentiate each functional zone by using volume and light. organized around an enclosed backyard, the design team capitilizes on the south-facing orientation. two sections of large sliding doors leads directly onto the rear garden and frames views to the outdoor swing and a lemon tree.

the courtyard can be accessed directly from the street, acting as a second, less formal entry to the home

a characteristic feature of the project is its roof profile; the irregular shifts in pitches, match the volume shifts internally. the exterior is made of painted recycled brickwork running below and shiplap hardwood cladding above. the alteration in materials highlights the volumetric changes, while the texture of brickwork and grain of plywood extenuates light and shadow. below the line within dining and kitchen space, the ceiling rakes from the low point of the datum to a significant peak, achieving morning sun through the high-level glazing to the east.

adjacent to the main living area is a room defined by its asymmetrical cathedral ceiling. the height accentuated by a hanging, black steel fireplace, back-dropped by views of the backyard and the industrial building beyond. at the room’s opposing end, the space is opened to northern light by a courtyard, which also provides light and views to the adjoining kitchen, living and bathroom spaces.
