kazuyo sejima and ryue nishizawa of SANAA have been chosen ahead of fellow japanese architects kengo kuma and jun aoki to extend shiga’s museum of modern art. as well as a new 6,500 square meter intervention, the scheme also includes the renovation of the site’s existing buildings and the maintenance of the surrounding parkland.

the masterplan seeks to integrate the extension with the existing museum buildings, as well as with the park’s natural terrain. connecting the site, SANAA’s curving pavilion boasts floor-to-ceiling glass walls that present sweeping views of the neighboring lake. the grounds will also be re-landscaped to ensure direct and efficient circulation routes.
