the art gallery of new south wales has announced that SANAA has been selected to extend the institution’s cultural contribution to the city as part of the sydney modern project. in winning the international competition, SANAA was chosen ahead of other renowned names such as david chipperfield, herzog & de meuron and renzo piano to complete the australian institution.

the tokyo-based practice, which is headed by pritzker architecture prize winners kazuyo sejima and ryue nishizawa, was unanimously selected by an international competition jury, chaired by gallery director dr michael brand. over the next year, the gallery will work closely with SANAA to design a final concept, developed with feedback garnered from the general public.

the sydney modern project will create a new landmark building with new and expanded spaces for art, live performance and film, along with spaces to study and participate in cultural programs. in addition to an entirely new structure, the $450 million AUD scheme will involve significant enhancements to the existing building, including the reintroduction of natural daylight to the original 19th-century galleries.

 

the undertaking is scheduled to be complete by 2021, in time for the 150th anniversary of the gallery’s opening. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
