tailored to the brand of e. tautz, sanderson studios, working alongside company owner, patrick grant, has completed the fashion retailer’s first flagship store in mayfair, london since 1867. woven through functionality and architecture is a made to measure experience, where traditional materials meet with contemporary form to reflect a brand revered and revitalized. ‘sanderson studios’ design and delivery perfectly articulates my vision for tautz, balancing the brand’s modern approach, commitment to luxury, and heritage,’ says grant.

working off of this concept, the store has been formed in in three sections. a minimal gallery space exhibits the mainline collection and compliments the refined made-to-measure environment below. these portions are joined together by a grand staircase and fitting rooms, fabricated from rich wooden cabinetry and subtle brass accents that evoke the mies van der rohe and philip johnson’s four seasons hotel restaurant in new york.

‘the tautz history speaks for itself, we did not want or need to create a 19th century pastiche. the flagship design achieves a blend of creativity and continuity, reinterpretation and reference,’ says founder, daniel sanderson. ‘the connecting space was designed as a piece of furniture in its own right—in which we could house patrick’s collection of classic mid-century furniture. we needed to find the right balance of materials for the beautiful gunni omann desk, hans peter piehl sofas and møller chairs. after much trial and error we found a dark sapele timber from a sustainable source that would stand up against the classics.’

the store and decor not only contemporize the mid-century reference, but also gesture to the clothing that e. tautz offers. free floating brass rails provide a platform for mainline collections, while bespoke wooden cabinetry heralds the luxury of made-to-measure suiting. the space is balanced by a degree of sensitivity and respect demanded by the store’s grade II listed setting in london’s west end.
