one hour outside of tokyo, in the japanese city of takasaki, architecture studios SNARK and OUVI have completed a three storey home with an irregularly shaped façade. the clients behind the project wanted a brightly lit and well ventilated dwelling that could be shared alongside their parents. consequently, the ground floor has been specifically configured to the needs of the family’s older generation.

the project is characterized by its asymmetrical frontage that also helps to shade the residence. internally, large windows positioned at the rear of the property ensure that internal volumes are filled with daylight. owing to the scheme’s location, bordering a local cemetery, apertures orientated towards the burial grounds do not risk the chance of being overlooked.
