with aesop ION in singapore recently opened, snøhetta has completed another branch of the australian skincare brand in düsseldorf, germany. sited in a bustling pedestrian plaza in the city, the architect’s response sees the design of this aesop interior subtly blurs the boundaries between inside and outside.

the focus inside is the tiered shelving made of douglas fir wood that curves around the space and stimulating a crescent effect that is reminiscent of an amphitheater. illuminated by downlights from the ceiling which mimics this floorplan, the retail space has used materiality, form and finished in neutral coloring to distinguish itself.

at the center of this implicit extension of the plaza sits a monolithic concrete sink; influenced by a fountain which locals regularly gather. conversely, an element of the interior is continued just beyond the stone façade, where two timber benches fitted with planter boxes invite visitors to sit and linger in the shade outside.
