after his greenery-filled ‘bosco verticale’ residential towers were completed in milan in 2014, stefano boeri has now announced that a similar design will be developed on the other side of the world — in china. backed by nanjing yang zi state-owned national investment group co.ltd, the ‘nanjing vertical forest’ will be the first of its kind in asia.

stefano boeri’s proposal will see the construction of two towers characterized by the interchanging of green tanks and balconies, following the prototype established in milan. the taller of the two towers will rise to a height of 200 meters, crowned at the top by a ‘green lantern’ with a private rooftop club. floors 8th-35 will host offices, a museum, and a green architecture school. meanwhile, the other tower will house a hyatt hotel and an array of commercial, recreational, and educational facilities.

along the flourishing façades, there will be 600 tall trees and 500 medium-sized trees among a total of 1,110 trees coming from local species. color will be integrated through the addition of 2,500 cascading plants and shrubs. the project is scheduled to be completed in 2018 and hopes to enliven and boost the development of its pukou district location. most importantly, the towers will help regenerate local biodiversity and provide an estimate of 35 tons of CO2 absorption each year, while producing 60kg of oxygen per day.
