the recently completed diving tower at the rijeka aquatic center pool designed by italian practice studio zoppini associati takes its formal cues from the naturally occurring faraglioni rocks that emerge from the sea’s surface near the coast. the faceted abstraction of the geological structures holds a strong individual presence in the skyline and still manages to fit into its context with the natural marine backdrop. clad in oxidized steel, the brown-tinted color recalls that of the stone without replicating it exactly. two cast-in-situ concrete cores contain the stairwell and elevator shaft integrate into the precast foundation and support the necessary cantilevered diving platforms at varying heights – according to olympic regulations. the continuous foundation and vertical structure are ideal to comply with structural requirements and maintain the necessary strength against wind loads. a thin galvanized steel frame is connected to the concrete cores and provides the substructure for the metal siding. each platform is also anchored into the cores and are made of a combination of precast concrete panels and polystyrene members to reduce the material load.
