maximizing natural light into the interiors, this family home by SYAP features a lifted clerestory window which enables sun control into the programs within. located in the suburb of yokkaichi city in japan, the design hopes to break the mold of its neighboring homes, where they have been built enclosed with fences and away from the local community.

the home has been set back from the road and orientated to face south

the rectangular structure is positioned and orientated to the south, and while inviting sunlight, it also allows the exterior garden to seamlessly merge with the surrounding greenery and rural landscape. inside, the two-storey space has been arranged that the private quarters are based on the upper level and the ground floor serving as an open-plan living space. as well as the lifted clerestory window running the length of the front façade, the architects have organized internal windows on each wall of the suspended bedrooms – evoking a sense of transparency.
