tetrarc plans music, dance and theater conservatory for rennes

in rennes, france, tetrarc architectes has unveiled plans for a new conservatory building capable of hosting music, dance, and theater related performances. sited on zagreb square, ’conservatoire de rennes’ will form part of a major urban regeneration. the four-storey scheme appears at first as a compact building. however, a curving roofline and sculptural angles lend it a more fluid presence. the façade oriented towards the public plaza is fully glazed, fostering an open and welcoming atmosphere. in contrast the northern elevation is more opaque, strictly aligned with the adjacent boulevard. conceived as a fifth façade, the undulating roof canopy contains an internal garden, bordered by a glass gallery.

at ground level, the centrally positioned auditorium features a dynamic cladding which is the result of an in-depth acoustic study. ‘the geometry of the panels is based on a harmonic progression of diamond-based pyramids,’ explain the architects. ‘this figure is available in several models multiplied like a fractal pattern.’ thick pleated curtains, in the form of a motorized device, are concealed along the ceiling. by successive spans of three meters, the curtains can quickly change the acoustic characteristics of the room.

a theater is found at the level above, and is joined by dance studios. here, a garden positioned on top of the auditorium provides a generously proportioned outdoor space. music classrooms are found on the third floor, while administrative areas cast views towards the lobby and the courtyard below. the project has a targeted completion date set for 2020.
