in celebration of andy warhol’s birthday, august 6th, we share with you a cultural installation within the main plaza of a commercial shopping mall. ‘the andy warhol temporary museum’ by portuguese LIKEarchitects was designed to host the exhibition ‘andy warhol – icons | psaier artworks and the factory’. the ‘pop up’ gallery was featured in the colombo retail center in lisbon, where it received more than 100,000 visitors.

the plan of the exhibition space was based on both pop and industrial references. avoiding the use of typical white exhibition rooms, the architects instead stacked raw aluminum paint cans on top of one another to form the structure.  the use of material reflects on society’s consumer culture and pays reference to the subjects of the pop artist’s work, as the modular metallic containers were repeated – defining the dimensions of the structure’s four rooms. a transparent plastic screen covered the spaces below, offering an introspective experience when inside the gallery, while still allowing light to enter from above. the see-through ceiling extended the visual relationship between the two opposing programs – art gallery and shopping mall, while capturing the curiosity of shoppers from above. in order to maximize the flow of people through the structure, two entrances were strategically located at each end.

LIKEarchitects has shared with designboom an exclusive video documenting the construction of the paint can construction. take a look!:
