having collaborated with aesop on three previous occasions, torafu architects has finalized a new store for the australian skincare company located in kyoto, japan. the scheme, designed and completed in just four months, involved the renovation of the interior and exterior of the two-storey building situated on one of the city’s busy shopping streets. titled ‘aesop kawaramachi’, the project blends seamlessly into the kyoto streetscape providing a casual and intimate environment for its clientele.

carefully altering the existing structure, torafu architects maximized the constraints of the 3.2 meter wide plot, with an inviting entrance leading towards a hospitality area at the rear where customers can relax and unwind. fully utilizing the six meter height of the design, squid fishing boat lights are hung through the center of the shop fully illuminating the compact volume. the second level of the scheme provides a place for its occupants to socialize further, an open space promoting interaction and engagement.

öya stone flooring is used alongside flexible boards for shelving and display units, helping establish a natural palette of materials which, when used in tandem with the pale green fixtures and fittings, evokes a sense of calmness within the store. the façade presented to the street is clad entirely in neutrally toned boards, allowing the outlet’s internal components to catch the eye and welcome in passing trade.
