vasily klyukin has shared his latest architectural vision — a radiant glass library that pays homage to american author richard bach. the design of the building takes the shape of a 1920s-style airplane, with an all-glass body, diagonally positioned wings and metallic propeller. on the edge of the propeller sits a large bird — a direct reference to one of bach’s most loved books, ‘jonathan livingston seagull’.

the novella, one of klyukin’s favorites, tells the story of a seagull learning about life and flight, conveying simple truths about individually and identity. this timeless classic inspired klyukin to imagine a library in bach’s name, forming a place for visitors to experience the author’s work and philosophical ideas. books are contained within a large reading room under the one of the wings, while the other forms a shelter for an open-air cafe hidden beneath.

‘it’s one of my favorite books ever,’ klyukin says of ‘johnathan livingston seagull’. ‘you must read it every five years. after creating ‘richard bach library’, I sent images to the author, requesting him to sign a book, but I got more — an invitation to visit his house. I cancelled everything and booked tickets immediately. on orcas island [where bach now lives] you can get your own flight in old, 1929 air traveler. it’s incredible to have a flight on this craft, and it inspired me to create this concept.’
