‘villa des sciences’ by parisian studio, LOG architectes, is a mixed-purpose building that adopts the typology of its surrounding context, while standing out with a compelling curving façade. located in paris, france, the structure’s program is comprised of housing, office, and commercial spaces. fitting into the existing urban fabric, the patterning and distribution of closed and open external elements embeds ‘villa des sciences’ seamlessly with the neighboring volumes. however, when viewed from afar the characterizing gable wall and ‘trompe-l’œil’ windows are noticeable. the façade mimics the texture of the other buildings, but its brick work has a rhythmic scheme with a monochromatic gradient of colored slabs. blurring the line between the roof and the exterior cladding, a darker anthracite is used at the top of the form, referencing typical parisian roof slates. the first floor of the complex is is allocated for retail while residential units are situated higher. a garden behind the site can be looked onto from patios that have a circular aperture pattern in the railing.
