vo trong nghia architects has completed the renovation of a factory office in the vietnamese city of ho chi minh. headed by the firm’s principle architects, vo trong nghia and masaaki iwamoto, the design serves as the headquarters of a clothing company in a country where the manufacture of apparel is a huge industry.

the existing factory is a two-storey steel building that has been refurbished in two sections. administrative areas are located primarily at the upper level, while production work is situated at ground floor level. the central office is conceived as a passageway with a large open window offering views to the adjacent factory. consequently, the large glazing enhances communication between administrative staff and workers. private areas, such as the directors’ office and meeting rooms, are positioned along the aisles of the central office space, separated by transparent glass partitions that showcase the company’s range of products.

local materials are used throughout with exposed brick and bamboo utilized to convey a sense of local identity and an environmental consciousness. the pliable bamboo ceiling, which conceals mechanical equipment and lighting fixtures, hovers above the administrative offices simulating a textile surface. externally, wires are attached to façade, with a degree of greenery provoking a stark contrast against the underlying steel structure of the factory.
