football club AS roma has announced the development of a 52,000 seater stadium to be built on the outskirts of the italian capital. entitled ‘stadio della roma’, the project will be undertaken by international studio woods bagot.

unlike the team’s current home, the stadio olimpico, the venue is being constructed specifically for the demands of soccer, with each seat oriented to give a optimum view of the playing surface. the steel and glass design is wrapped in a stone scrim enveloping the stadium and providing a dynamic interpretation of the colosseum’s arches, while a translucent glass and teflon coated fabric canopy protects spectators from the elements.

the architecture enables the venue to be easily configured to multiple configurations, including retractable stage canopies, rigging, and turf protection systems, providing extreme flexibility as a place for concerts with an expansion capacity of 60,000. as well as hosting international competitions and major entertainment events, the venue will serve as the center point of a larger mixed-use development, comprising retail outlets, dining facilities and recreational services.

a state-of-the-art facility – situated just north of the main arena – is dedicated to AS roma’s first team training. in addition to 2 full-size, and one half-size pitches, the center will employ the latest and most sophisticated training technology and equipment.

‘it is very exciting to have such a significant project as my first stadium designed with woods bagot. stadio della roma will be one of europe’s most sophisticated stadiums and will be groundbreaking in the inclusion of a significant ancillary development of restaurants, entertainment and training facilities, creating a 365 day destination,’ says dan meis, woods bagot sport design leader.

costing $400 million USD, ‘stadio della roma’ is scheduled for completion in time for the 2016-17 serie A season.
