installed in a regular business lobby at the ‘world building’ in tokyo, the ‘world basics 2013 AW exhibition / concept models for display furniture’ by japanese firm schemata architects, explores the idea of renewable basics – staple pieces that are meant to last. alongside the reception counter and meeting tables of the lobby, the architects have curated an uncluttered layout of custom-built pieces. incorporating both the bizarre and the familiar into the one space, unusual elements such as watering cans and sewing machines co-exist naturally with regular business activities and meeting tables.

‘basics’, explains schemata architects, ‘is something that keeps renewing itself, according to demands of the society or advancement in technologies.’

the design challenges this concept of the ‘renewable basic’ by breaking stereotypical images of conventional furniture. the hybrid between soft and hard pieces is explored with the clothing racks made from wood and the display tables a soft, spongy material. a welcome distraction for the building’s workers, the exhibition reflects design pieces that are simple but add significant value to daily life.
