in the forested land of epse, the netherlands, XYZ architecten has finished construction a project titled ‘table house’. the name finds its origins in the main design concept of the dwelling. envisioned as a translation of the furnishing featured in dining rooms around the world, the form is a conglomeration of two volumes: a one floor, rectilinear bar and a large, two-storey box. the ground floor is characterized by a loft-like layout. the client wanted to relax, to cook, to paint, and to have exhibitions of his work in the same room, yet he wanted to keep certain activities optically isolated. thus, it contains the public programs such as the lounge and kitchen, which are pushed to the back of the building away from the driveway. with the addition of a corridor, the action also provides additional partitions for the display of his creations. in order to access the main living spaces, entry is provided through a recessed doorway. this gesture is mimicked on the opposing side of the structure through a porte-cochere for residents to protect their cars from harsh weather conditions. because of the daylight and wind, the front and the rear doors are designed as aluminum curtain walls carrying no dead loads. in response, the whole house is heated and cooled by means of a floor heating system and heat pump.
