approaching the extension of korean potter jung gli-young’s gallery in cheongdo-gun, korea is a bit of an odd affair. the entirety of the structure, designed by yoon space design, is clad in mirrors. an effort to bring the beauty of the surrounding area into the building, it continues internally, creating a harmonic balance perfectly suited to the artist’s work.

gallery exterior

a large majority of the interior is devoted to well, nothing. glass adorns every space it can, leaving the adjacent dense forest to give the space a sense of serenity and quiet. framed like a picture, the landscape changes gradually throughout the seasons, functioning like a refreshed backdrop for the constantly changing works inside.

the mirrored extension features a deep, ethereal palette of red and black. the former carries over from the exterior, where it is also found in colored LEDs that run the length of the staircase. on the ground floor, a passage allows movement between the addition and main gallery. here, a more classic style of wood and neutral colors is utilized.

in the main gallery, mirrors, glass, and deep shelves make the small area feel much larger than it actually is. tables of various heights create a visual hierarchy for which gli-young to display work as seen fit. together, the main space and extension offer a total of 115m2 of space
