UPDATE: on december 16, 2018 it was announced that ‘grace on coronation’, designed by the late zaha hadid, would not go ahead. according to the urban developer, the project had originally been approved, however australia’s court of appeal decided that the region’s strict height limits must be obeyed. development group sunland said it will respect the decision and is now working on a new scheme for the site. read more about hadid’s design in our original article below.

september 4, 2014: four kilometers west of brisbane’s central business district, zaha hadid has designed three residential towers located on the former site of the australian broadcasting corporation in toowong. the development, entitled ‘grace on coronation’, would contain 486 apartments, eight villas, and also includes the landscaped parklands that run alongside the city’s riverbank. the neighboring heritage-listed middenbury house will also be preserved as part of the project. describing the proposed project, zaha hadid said, ‘the design tapers each structure to minimize their footprint and open the riverfront to the public; creating a vibrant civic space for toowong within a new riverside park.’

our vision is to create a vibrant urban village which sensitively activates its urban and riverfront context through compelling architecture and landscape design, explained sunland managing director, sahba abedian. ‘importantly, it is a vision that opens up the site to the broader community through the creation of expansive public parklands, a riverside viewing platform and the transformation of middenbury into a meaningful public space.’ subject to receiving planning approval, work is scheduled to start on-site in late 2015.
