zooco estudio has completed the design of an arts and culture complex in verín, a small town in northwestern spain close to the portuguese border. the project, which has been documented in images taken by photographer roland halbe, comprises six stone-clad volumes of various sizes. the largest of these monolithic blocks contains the site’s auditorium, while other, similarly sized boxes, house multi-purpose areas, lecture rooms, administration zones, and a restaurant.

architects zooco estudio indented that the ‘centro de las artes de verín’ provided the intimacy of a home, and, at the same time, the heterogeneity of a town. ‘each use of the program required by the city hall materializes as a unit, as a volume that is aligned to the edge of the plot creating a space of coexistence and relationship, without hierarchies, supporting the idea of small community,’ explains the design team.

although the complex may appear at first to be randomly scattered across the landscape, the buildings have been carefully positioned to establish a series of specific relationships and variants. defined by a sense of flexibility and unpredictability, the scheme creates a number of interstitial spaces, formed among the six volumes. these internal areas not only offer circulatory zones, but also serve as the backdrop for impromptu meetings and discussions.
