the relationship between man and his environment has undergone a radical change due to the rise in technology. the borders between nature and the human senses has become desensitised as we reach further for virtual interaction. atelier 37.2 has explored this notion with ‘graft’ – a multidisciplinary project that encompasses sculpture, dance, photography and film within the scope of a performance piece.

graft – dance of a species to come by atelier 37.2

‘graft’ invents a new species of man who seeks to find physical presence in the world around him. the ‘new species’ whose identity is fragmented, experiments with the unlimited horizon of virtuality that doesn’t involve the physical presence of the body. these rudimentary figures explore a form of post-humanity through a speculative utopia. the actors in the film move between blocks of wood which have been mounted on the wall, acting as a source of interaction for the performers and as focal points within the display.

the initiative was initially realised at the galerie temple in paris. the white cubed room became an active part of the installation presenting a neutral sterile environment which allowed the artwork and performers to take center stage. the use of wooden battens were assembled to create a series of small sculptural pieces that reflected the architecture of a web and the growing nature of the human mind.
