societies of the world have made stunning advances in the realms of bionics, prosthetics, organ transplantation and growth, and pharmaceuticals. we’ve entered the realm of designer babies, embryo screening, the ability to eradicate disease and choose the traits of ourselves and our children. plastic surgery is so widely practiced that countless people now feel a societal obligation to recreate themselves based on inescapable advertising campaigns and imposed guidelines. the human body is becoming more efficient, more homogenous, and as technology progresses so too will the trend. however, the one item that has yet to catch up with the rapid movements of society, is our clothes.

clothing is worn for, in most cases, purely aesthetic purposes. ‘skin suits’ by apparel/textiles designer chloe cooper, attempts to explore why. she sees a future where garments will not simply cover but transform the body. when a organ or trait is unwanted or failing, consumers will simply be able to walk into a store and choose a suit that enhances the area. when donned it will fuse to their figure, metamorphosing their physical appearance and internal workings.

to solve her sister’s stomach pains and acid reflex issues, cooper created the ‘stomach suit’. the garb is fashioned after cow’s stomachs, whose genetic traits form a system of smoother digestion that prevents stomach ulcers and other various ailments. intrigued by her own lack of strength, she created the ‘muscle suit’. based on dung beetles who are able to live over 100 times their body weight, when worn it will eradicate muscle atrophy, synthesizing cloth and body into a dense mesh of tissue and fascia. if you had the choice, what would you change?
