primitive and sacred art, esotericism, spiritualism and folklore are only a few of the metaphysical motifs that inform the magical work of el gato chimney. from now until january 23, 2016, the italian artist presents the exhibition ‘preternatural history’ at antonio colombo arte contemporanea in milan comprising new mixed media paintings. ‘preternatural history’ is told through anthropomorphic creatures and hybrid beings, where animals, both fictional and genuine, don ceremonial attire and tribal masks. el gato chimney appropriates the intrinsic symbolism of the animal kingdom to narrate an imagined universe that, while resisting rational explanations, answers to more instinctive and visceral needs.
