for more than 30 years, lee bul has relayed stories of mythology, utopia and the relationship between man and nature though an artistic practice that spans scale models, illustration and installation. during the biennale internationale design saint-etienne 2015, the musée d’art moderne et contemporain de saint-étienne métropole presents a monumental exhibition of the korean artist’s expansive oeuvre, curated by lóránd hegyi.

uniting design, architecture and fine art, bul presents labyrinthine installations that play with light and various materials, a set of graphic works created over the last twenty years, preparatory models and sculptures for site visitors to experience and wander within. immersive mazes of mirrors and light project site visitors into personal, infinite universes. the reflective floor of the central exhibition hall further the immense feeling of disorientation and displacement, themes pushed by bul throughout her creative discovery. for her work on paper, bul’s imaginary creations include aliens, messengers from an unknown being, foreign and anguish-inducing universe interacting with our post-modern reality.
