within the city borders of hong kong, manuel alvarez diestro has captured surreal geographical intersections of nature and urbanization. the ‘new towns’, developed by the government in order to accommodate the booming population, come in direct contact with the overgrowth of natural reservoir that encompasses it. rather than capturing the asian metropolis’ ultra-dense facades, diestro shifts the composition towards the mountains, were lush greenery and labyrinthine tree coverings interweave with urban sites. the vertical towers occupy just a small part of the photo, almost anecdotal, becoming a metaphor of human isolation and lack of connection with the surrounding world.
