megan geckler produces immersive rainbow cube installation in LA

a 10x10x10 aluminum structure supports the woven ‘rainbow cube’ by installation-artist and sculptor megan geckler. intertwining the form are thousands of strands of florescent flagging tape — geckler’s signature material — in a spectrum of colors including pink, blue, yellow, green, and silver.

when viewed from the exterior, the cube’s frenetic pattern resembles an extreme photographic closeup. enlarged to the point of recognition, individual pixels evolve from mere blips to distinguishable blocks of color. inside, the experience is completely different. backlit from outside, the translucent flagging tape takes on an ethereal quality. overlaid bands combine, creating vivid fields of violet, cyan, and ochre.
