london and melbourne based design practice NEON have set their ‘house of mirrors’ along the picturesque coastal walk from bondi beach to tamarama beach in sydney. presented for this year’s edition of sculpture by the sea — running from now until november 9th, 2014 — the monumental installation is conceived as a reinterpretation of the traditional construction of an australian beach hut.

the cubed volume comprises a modular arrangement of gabion cages, typically filled with rocks, yet intentionally left empty here to create a sense of transparency that allows for views of the ocean. within the interior walls, mirrored surfaces reflect kaleidoscope scenes from the surrounding landscape, enveloping the visitor into a panoramic maze. the house has been envisioned to be almost invisible as it subtly blends into the space that surrounds it, acting as a reflective mass hidden in a cloud of caged constructions.
