netherlands-based artist olaf mooij has created ‘the coach’, a mobile artist studio that was built as a collage out of found and used parts. the motivation behind the project recalls the artist’s memories as a postwar child when he used to play in the basement of his house where his parents kept a stove in case of a new war. this place was for mooij anything that his imagination and hands could conceive: carpenter’s workshop, laboratory, theatre stage, cinema, sound experiment room, soapbox car construction, etc. with ‘the coach’ he aims to achieve the same, creating a transportable unit that can serve as an artist’s studio.

the idea behind the project is to create a safe place where artists can create

from all his childhood memories, the ones of the spaceship were the best ones for the artist. ‘the safe feeling that I experienced when I was playing in this spaceship was so deep that I decided to use this feeling as a guideline for building the coach,’ comments on his latest work. ‘the coach’ is a piece that acts as a refuge, as a safe place for those who suffer from anxiety and want to have a shelter, while they create.
