‘I’ll be your mirror 1’

canadian artist laurel johannesson captures scenes on land from a tranquil and submerged aquatic location. distorted by the water’s ever-changing surface, each of the various stills are taken in a series to capture the changing moments from underwater. exploring the effects of mirroring, reflecting and refracting created by the meniscus, the outer world is transformed into a distant dreamscape. photographed while swimming in the lido di venezia in venice, italy, the images are printed on metallic paper and laminated with quarter-inch acrylic.

taken while swimming, johannesson places viewers into her solitary experience as she defies gravity and witnesses a shifting ground which contains landscape, figure and water from one point of view.
