working alongside visual artist barbara visser, RAAAF [rietveld architecture-art-affordances] has presented ‘outstanding landscape of affordances’, a project that considers how contemporary offices can encourage a more active and healthy lifestyle. the work, commissioned by the netherlands’ chief government architect, responds to the notion that being continually seated throughout the day is bad for you, and portrays a landscape of possibilities for upright working.

an animation – entitled ‘sitting kills’ – shows a rock-like structure that encompasses hundreds of options for working in positions between standing and lying down. the angular form of the sculpture offers its users the chance to find the optimal position to complete their duties throughout the day. with our entire surroundings designed around sitting, the project displays a radical break from orthodox office situations and contemplates a future where standing is considered normal practice.

‘outstanding landscape of affordances’ is to be realized by the artists in amsterdam later this year.
