doug aitken: 100 YRS
303 gallery, new york
on now through march 23rd, 2013
303 gallery, new york presents the latest work of american artist doug aitken titled 'sonic fountain' in the exhibition '100 YRS'- in which water
drips from 5 rods suspended from the ceiling, falling into a concrete crater specifically dug out of the gallery floor. the flow of water itself is
manipulated so as to create specific sounds in regular patterns and intervals that will merge, collapse and overlap in various combinations of
speed and volume, lending to the symphonic structure of the artwork. the liquid appears milky white and the amplified sound of droplets is
reminiscent of breathing, and along with the pool's eerie glow, the fountain creates its own sonic system of tracking time. watch a video
of the work here.
