dirk vanderschueren, owner of the belgian shoe

manufacturer cortina group
together with dutchman william (boy) habraken and antwerp shoemaker couple
veerle swenters and pierre bogaerts created SONS- shoes or no shoes museum
in kruishoutem, belgium. the museum houses the biggest ethnographic shoe
collection in the world next a modern art- and a designers collection.

vanderschueren commented ‘the idea is that the entire project should be seen as
an adventure. by allowing the three shoe collections to confront each other, we are
convinced that you will become involved and that you will have a sensational experience.
you can go on your discovery and turn your visit into a wonderful adventure…

the building, originally built in 1973 by emile veranneman and architect christiaan
vander plaetse,
maintained the original structure. young belgian architect lode uytterschaut
tried ompletely covered it with lead to fortify the architectural volume into a massive and
monumental unity.
