moody snapshots juxtaposed against boring old google street view images

are you aware of how much personal information we offer up to the internet?

rutgers’ social media information lab has recently launched a new project  ‘the beat’ which pairs geotagged instagram photos with the location their were taken on google street view. it’s a playful use of the photo-sharing app’s API, similar to ‘this is now’, a real-time chronicle of life in several cities around the world.

on the beat, you can browse photos by entering your desired hashtag in the search bar. the beat then displays photos tagged with your search term with a google street view photo from where the photo was taken.

recent instagram newsthe photo sharing social network instagram has revealed a thai airport to be most popular place to upload photos in 2012.

the new york post claimed that instagram may have lost nearly a quarter of its daily active users after changing its terms of service in early december 2012.

the fallout has been sensationalized and mashable broke down the numbers:first of all, the post article was cherry-picking numbers. appdata’s record of instagram’s daily active users plummeted from 16.4 million on december 19 to 12.4 million today. but the number of people who used instagram in the last month actually rose in the same time period, from 42.5 million to 44 million.

instagram’s brand has been tarnished by the ToS scandal, and while some users are filing a lawsuit against the app and its new owner facebook, many photographers are willing to return to the service following the CEO’s apology.
