birmingham-based jewelry designer tom lynall has veered from his wearable art making practice to focus on a unique brand of miniature craftsmanship: pencil carvings. etched and sketched into the tip of colored and lead pencils are tiny characters, creatures and landscapes — one example even sees a series of pacman figures lining an interior crevice carved into the side of a standard writing tool. lynall carefully carves and paints the minuscule figurines — most recently a smiling stack of emojis — and places them onto the very edge of a pencil, leaving nearby an x-acto blade or coin to give viewers a sense of their near-microscopic scale.
