former architect turned artist toni halonen creates striking, pared-down illustrations defined by bright and bold colors. the helsinki-based designer forms figures, settings and scenes comprised primarily of basic, geometric shapes, lines, and blocks of saturated tones. borderless silhouettes and crudely-configured compositions recall the raw and unhindered imagination of a child, something halonen aims to achieve throughout his work. ‘drawing photo-realistically is the most boring thing ever — I like a rougher and more personal style in art and illustration. the honesty of children’s drawings is pure gold. I strive for the same kind of freedom in my own work.’
