jakub szczęsny of SZCZ has often worked with atypical tasks and unusual users, squeezing a writer’s studio into a 152 centimeter-wide apartment and fitting a six-family house on a forested plot where no trees could be cut down. more recently, szczęsny was tasked with another unconventional request — to design a chicken coup to house animals at the saint louis science center in missouri. while being sure to provide for the physical needs of the chickens, szczęsny also wanted to have some fun in designing the animal abode, constructing the coup in the shape of a giant UFO.

the full requirements of a habitat for chickens have been met: the ‘UFO coup’ is well ventilated, provides an area of shade, and feels safe and comfortable for the animals inside. szczęsny has also created a unique access point for chickens entering the interior — a long ladder that connects the grass to a large stilted volume that sits about four feet above the ground. the playful addition of a transparent viewing orb allows visitors and caretakers at the saint louis science center to peek inside of the coup and view the chickens in their ‘extraterrestrial’ habitat.
