using just two modest mediums — hot glue and a sheet of plastic — japanese artist yasuaki onishi has fabricated a weightless mountianscape suspended from the ceiling of the mine, dubai. ‘reverse of volume MI’ is onishi’s latest sculptural installation, reorienting the room it inhabits as a vast, aerial expanse of thin and fragile materials. carefully and meticulously stringing dyed black glue from the roof and delicately connecting it to precise points on the plastic, onishi crafts an undulating convex amplitude that hovers above the floor’s surface. the result casts an invisible rugged terrain beneath, silhouetting a hollow form that marries positive and negative space.
