artist yoni alter has created a collection of colorful GIFs where hidden animals emerge from a splattering of abstract dots. ostriches, monkeys, kangaroos and foxes alike sprint out of obscurity in a series of colorful motions, and just as quickly deteriorate into a mess of jumbled hues.

the GIFs are borrowed from alter’s mobile app ‘dottted’, where players attempt to touch the screen in strategic places to reveal a hidden animal. too many wrong turns and the user loses a life, but follow the clusters of dots correctly and the shape of the hidden creature slowly appears. the ingenious series represents a continuation of alter’s investigation into color and form, and the journey from abstraction to recognition. presented as a kind of psychedelic pareidolia (the phenomenon of perceiving familiar shapes where none exist—like cloud watching) the images challenge our capacity to make sense out of disorder, or find meaning where there may be none. if they really tickle your fancy, the set is also available as a collection of iMessage stickers.
