BECK' S PRIZE

design a key and what it opens

title: davinci’s portrait as a password field
# : 003
jim termeer from usa

designer's own words:
Passwords act as both lock and key.

Description: This is a framed print/poster that contains a random matrix
of characters generated by the tonal qualities of the Davinci’s portait.
These characters can be used as passwords.

How to use: Locate at place on the picture that you can remember. For
example, “I always keep my banking password next to Davinci’s ear.” Look
for strings that almost look like words (like “WESUoFEK”). Those are the
ones that you will be able to retrieve later in the image field.

Materials/ process: Random password field generated from ASCII image
generator and image of Davinci (father of Cryptography). Inkjet printed
on archival paper.

Need: Most experts in cryptography say that people create passwords
that are easily guessed or broken by intruders or hackers. They also say
that the most unbreakable passwords are random and hard to remember—and
is precisely why people don’t use them. This is a means to find hard to
crack passwords yet easily retrieve them.

Proposal for Milan design week (if chosen): Print and include as a
tear-out centerfold in the catalog.

Proposal for Mi Art Salon (if chosen): 200 full size inkjet archival
prints (15” x 22”) to be handed out at the salon show. Artist can
coordinate the printing.
