BECK' S PRIZE

design a key and what it opens

title: iconic keys

naohiro seki from united kingdom

designer's own words:
As we are surrounded by numerous keys in our everyday life,
I would like to suggest our keys should give an impression of what they open.

As an example of this, I have designed a key and a transition vale for a bicycle.
The key used for the bike has a certain visual identity, which reminds the user
that it is the key for the bicycle. Thus using the icon of a popular bicycle lock.
A lock was set into a frame of the bicycle, the frame is opened with the key,
which enables the cyclist to park the bike.
The bike and lock are merged so it is impossible to destroy the lock.
If someone tried to steel the bike and the lock was forcibly removed this
would result in a damaged frame.
A heavily damaged bike would be dangerous to ride and considered useless
and would make it difficult for a thief to sell the stolen bike. Therefore this
bicycle itself works as a lock, using an iconic key, if damaged through force, so is the bike.
